The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering was set up at Gulmarg by the Government of India, Department of Tourism, in the year 1969 with the aim to introduce adventure sports among the youth and to promote the tourism industry. The Institute imparts technical training and conducts various courses such as Snow Skiing at Gulmarg (mid December- early April), Water Skiing in beautiful lakes of Kashmir Valley (May-August), Trekking/Mountaineering programmes in Kashmir & Ladakh (September-October). Besides the Institute proposes to start with White Water Rafting in Lidder and Sindh rivers (May-September), Paragliding at Gulmarg, Yousmarg and Sonmarg as well as higher reaches (April-October). The Institute has qualified Ski Instructors most of whom have had advance training in abroad. The Institute has latest and best-imported equipment. The Institute provides the facilities of boarding , lodging and training during the conduct of courses.
